How Can I Get a Certificate Signing Request (CSR)?
How Can I Get a Certificate Signing Request (CSR)?
Solution
I want to purchase an SSL certificate. I need a Certificate Signing Request (CSR). How can I obtain it?
Your Certificate Authority (CA) (the place from which you plan to purchase your certificate) should provide you with the instructions on how to generate the CSR.
Generally speaking, you need to login to the server command line through SSH and generate a CSR using a series of "openssl" commands. Every SSL certificate authority varies on these instructions a little, so it would be best to contact your CA and ask them for their preferred directions.
For example, here are the instructions for a few well known CA's:
Thawte
VeriSign
GeoTrust
We use Apache+Mod_SSL on our servers.
After you answer all the questions, a file named cert.csr will be created in your home directory. You may then download it with an FTP client and send it to your certificate provider.
If you have any questions about logging into server and running the commands, please contact us, and we will be pleased to assist.
